Noira: Cool autumn breeze swayed the tall stalks of greenery, in an almost rhythmic manner, as it flowed into her nostrils. To and fro, to and fro. A particularly vibrant tuft of grass attracted the mare's attention, and she shuffled forward quietly, careful not to disturb any twigs or crunching leaves below her. Nuzzling a few vermillion leaves from her path, she lowered her muzzle and ripped off the grass from its threshhold. Then, suddenly, she froze a moment; footsteps? Her ears swiveled, erect.
Gabrielle Florez hummed quietly while thumbing through her clipboard, there was a new comer! She was scheduled for a quick physical exam, without much involved. There would be no drawing of blood, or anything to that degree. Just any obvious signs of illness. With purpose filled steps, she quickly made her way out of the barn doors. The fresh, pure smell of autumn wind immediately greeted her; wrapping her in a cold embrace. The clipboard listed all of the horses important information, most likely a copy of the boarding application. It seemed the lucky equine was an Andalusian, three years old, and, she seemed to of had a neglectful owner. Gabby sighed softly; the horse had such a pretty physique, and name; no sooner had she reached the pasture did she figure out her plan. First, she would gain as much trust as possible. Secondly, give her a healthy treat or two, while looking up a bit close. Shuffling the papers, and looking anywhere but the horse she began to coo softly; nonsense mostly.
Noira shuffled her hooves a bit, turning to face the source of the sound of foosteps against cobblestone. A human, though she didn't seem threatening as she took her position at the edge of the pasture. Each move, each step, was thoroughly examined by Noira as her soulful eyes remained on her, fixated. Still, she had an ingrained instinct that humans could put up quite the facade. Her nostrils flared -- she smelled something edible. Did the woman carry it? Limbs rigid, tail swishing in the manner of nervous habit, she stood, head held up with alertness. The first instinct that crossed her mind was definitely, "Should I run?" She swallowed the bite of grass she had been gnawing on, and remained motionless, save for twitching ears.
Gabrielle Florez continued to coo, but refrained from moving much. She only moved if it was absolutely needed; any movement could scare the mare, and she didn't want that. Gabby eyed the mare from her lashes, before slowly lifting her hand. It was a risk she didn't want to take, but she didn't quite have all the time in the world. Very quietly she stepped forwards, her hand inside her treat-pouch for a moment. The mare looked like a peppermint mare, so she took out three peppermints. Rolling them around in her hands, she basically covered them in the scent. If she liked the way peppermints smelt, she should like the way her hands smelt; easing some of the discomfort. Moments later she tossed a peppermint maybe a foot away from her; trying her best to be as slow as possible.
Noira: anticipated the woman to extend her arm and toss something or other It was one of those things horses had; an almost sixth-sense type of thing, that type of mentality no one can really explain. Even with this "forewarning", the mare still hopped back a couple feet, her ears pressed against her head, analyzing. But before she could get too deep in thought, her nostrils flared like huge caverns; the pungent aroma of peppermint struck her like a slap in the face, to put it metaphorically. It was making her salivate just smelling the small round candies, but her hooves remained glued to the spot. She had been lured with tasty treats before, reeled in like a fish. Deciding to take the risk, she took a few unsure steps forward, head held low, eyes flickering from the peppermint to the woman and back. She kept her slow pace, a step every few seconds. Thud... thud... thud. Noira's lips lowered to the ground, fishing around in the grass for the peppermint that filled her nasal cavity [c]
Noira: now. She could almost taste it on her tongue. Successfully locating it, she scooped it up with her pink tongue, chewed a bit, swallowed. The woman still didn't seem hostile, or want to harm her. The odor had not dispersed -- it still hung thick in the air, potent to her keen sense of smell. The mare took a few more cautious steps forward, and though they were slow, they were a bit more surefooted than moments ago. Her eyes fixed upon the woman, she continued to move forward, until, practically unbeknownst to her, her muzzle was inches from the woman's hands. Though, it was almost reassuring -- the scent of the food mixed with a warm aire that she gave off, it seemed rather safe.
Gabrielle Florez's heart practically melted. Really, she didn't understand why people went out of their way to cause harm to usually peaceful animals. Just thinking about the word neglect, there could be many, many serious problems with the mare. She could have worms, a serious disease, birth defect, anything really. Mentally, she noted to have her supervisor's permission to fully check the mare over. Gabby was lost in her thoughts until she heard soft steps, and imagine her surprise whenever the horse came into view. Physically, she looked pretty good. A little underweight, nothing a few weeks of work couldn't help. Even still, there could be more problems, and that worried her. While thinking again, she rubbed her palms against another peppermint, then tossed it at the ground, a good three inches from the mare. If all went well, she would have her palm outwards for her to smell, and gobble up the next one. She was such an Andalusian. Not that it was an insult, if anything it was a compliment.
Noira: thingyed her head a little, almost sniffing the woman's hands, then realizing another small candy had landed in the ground before her. With more confidence, her head gravitated toward the ground and she gobbled up the next peppermint -- only now did she realize the extent of her hunger. She had grazed here and there throughout the day, but mostly laid warming herself in the sun. Since her appetite had never been thoroughly satiated, it needed a little kickstart -- similar to when humans do not eat for some time, they just stop feeling hungry. She savored the flavor of the treat and her ears perked up again, eyes and nose searching. She hopped forward a bit, scenting the odor heavily on the woman's hands. At that, she slowed, but with a moment's discerning, she pressed her muzzle into the woman's hands. They were warm despite the November chill, and it felt nice on her soft nose. Like a fuzzy blanket. The peppermint was potent, here; she stuck out her tongue and licked [c]
Noira: tentatively between the woman's fingers, searching for a morsel, blowing through her nose a bit.
Gabrielle Florez grinned, but kept her hands still. So far so good! Gabby continued to wait until the mare signaled she was okay, and that she was ready to be touched; it came as her fingers being licked. Very slowly she raised one of her hands, keeping the other relaxed. For now she would only make small steps. If the mare didn't protest too much, she would bring her hand up to her face, slipping a couple fingers through the halter to keep her here. Not that it would really matter, if she wanted to escape, she very well could. Her other hand slipped from it's position infront of her, to her treat bag; pulling out a carrot this time. If all went well, Gabby could safely look around her body for any cuts or sores. She held high hopes for the equine, she looked very promising.
Noira: It seemed as though all traces of peppermint had been licked clean off the woman's fingers; they should've been squeaky clean, with the thoroughness that Noira took cleaning them off. She tilted her head a bit, nasal passages still open wide, seeing if she held any more tidbits. She flinched ever so slightly as Gabby brought her hand up to her, but then leaned slightly into her palm, as if she could now associate her scent and hand with pleasure and food. Then, an almost quizzical look was conveyed through the horse's deep eyes; as if to say, "What are we doing now?" It was not a fearful instinct that crossed her mind, but somewhat of a curious one.
