Saera whistled as she closed the gate behind her, carrying an empty bucket in her hands as she exited the pasture. The heavy load she was heaving before was now lifted from her, giving her a pure sense of liberation. The feline checked her watch, and, sure enough, it was her afternoon break. She decided to roam the farm like she usually did on nice cool summer days like these, chewing on a cracker she'd brought for a snack. Saera meandered up to an occupied pasture, having spotted a grazing mare in the field. Before she decided to move on, a thought crossed her mind about a favour a friend had asked of her. It was for this reason that she lagged at the mare's enclosure, examining her from afar.
Athena's Glory lifted her crainium, shaking her tassles and gazing with happy, friendly eyes at the furre. She'd whicker, swishing her tails at the pests that bit her ivory hues. The mare would look to the skies, watching white puffy clouds as they floated. She'd again switch her tail, lowering her head and nipping aimlessly at the grass. The mare would then walk over to the fence a bit, wondering why this girl didn't move on like the others. Lithe body would shiver under her blanket, shooing at the pests again. She'd flick her auds forwards, watching with interest.
Saera went through her memories of the horses at the barn. She noted that she'd not seen the mare around in the stalls before, which must mean she was either newly boarded or being sold at the next auction. "Hey, girl," Saera outstretch a gloved hand, palm up, as an inoffensive gesture of greeting. She was careful not to startle the horse or make any quick movements, as they'd just met and were strangers to each other.
Athena's Glory flickered her auds, whinnying. She'd walk up to the fence, putting her nose in the palm, as if expecting a treat. She'd close her eyes in contentment as the breeze went by, giving her a break from the flies and 'Skeeters. She'd sigh and scan the horizons with blue pools.
Saera giggled, scratching her nose gently as it greeted her. "You're a sweet girl, aren't you," she said. "I know just the person who would love to see you sometime." Her hand ventured up to the mare's neck, where she pat it a few times. Fingers extracted a peppermint from her pocket, which she offered in her other palm.
Athena's Glory would open her eyes once she felt the scratching, nuzzling the girl's shoulder before happily munching the peppermint. The mare yawned, enjoying the pats. She'd never been treated as well as this. The blanket hid scars from whips being driven too hard. Mare probably hadn't deserved that at all.
Saera felt something odd as she stroked the mare's neck, and ran her fingers over the spot a second time. It took her moment before she realized she was feeling skin and not the smoothness of her coat. In contrast, the skin felt dry and unhealthy. Perplexed, Saera slipped into the pasture beside the mare to investigate the area at a closer perspective. "What's happened to you, girl?" She gasped, following the scar along her neck and onto her withers.
Athena's Glory shuddered as the mare touched the scar, the painful memories of the whips filling her mind. The laughter of the men's own enjoyment haunted her and her breathing became faster, the haunting memories filling the creatures mind. The whips sting still filling her heart with sadness.
Saera noticed the tension in her muscles as she went over the injury, and withdrew her hand reluctantly. Though curious, she refused to upset the sweet mare in any way. Concern broke her forehead with lines, but a smile crept onto her lips with time. "You stay here, I'll be back," she said before taking off to the barn. She returned shortly after with a grooming kit in her hands, and entered the pasture quietly. Holding up the curry comb for the mare to sniff, Saera regarded the blanket she wore from the corner of her eye, imagining the injuries concealed beneath it. She would find out soon enough.
Athena's Glory mare would sniff the curry, nodding as if accepting. She'd prepare herself, ready for a gasp of shock. Blanket was put on so nobody would be able to see the scars, thinking that would detour people from caring about her. It did, usually, but she sensed something different in this girl.. something more kind than the other furres.
Saera braced herself inwardly as she unstrapped the violet blanket. As it fell off, the feline's curiousity was greeted with a frightful sight. Her fears were confirmed-- the mare had been abused at one point in her life. Saera worked over her coat wordlessly with the comb, gently grooming in loose circles. She held back her horror, but showed her sympathy with calming words and pats. When she got to the soft brush, with the most comfortable bristles, the feline used it longer than necessary on her sensitive pelt in order to relax her. "That's a girl," she said once she'd finished. From the examining she'd done, it seemed as though the scars were given to her by whips.
Athena's Glory felt the air wash over her scars, relaxing as the soft brush brushed her pelt. The breathing slowed to a calm pace, though she still remembered the men's laughter clearly. The thoughts washed away with the gentle moments of the brush. She'd nuzzle the girl's hands as if to say, "Please don't leave me alone...".
Saera hugged her neck, patting her withers as she said, "Don't worry," in her most determined tone. To assure her groom lasted as long as it could, the female replaced her blanket securely. Not only would her groom be preserved, but her injuries would be less prone to the elements and more damage.
Athena's Glory felt the blanket slide back onto her back, enjoying the blockage from the chilled breeze. She'd shake her mane before switching her tail again, hoping the bugs didn't get to her scars. She seemed strong. The scars didn't hurt her, it was the memories that hurt her.
